A Guide to the Different Types of Coffee Beans

We’ve all gone to our favorite coffee shop, ordered the macchiato, and looked at the menu, assuming that’s the only bean they’ve got. But did you know there’s a huge variety of beans found worldwide?

Coffee comes from a seed that grows in cherry trees and can be harvested in different countries. For the many regions it can grow, there are just as many types of coffee beans, each with their taste.

Keep reading to learn all about the different types of coffee beans!

Arabica

Arabica Coffee is one of the most popular types of coffee beans in the world. It comes from the Coffea Arabica plant and is known for producing a sweet and aromatic cup of coffee.

This coffee bean is versatile and can be used for drip coffee, espresso, cold brew, and French press. Arabica Coffee is usually milder and sweeter than other coffee beans and has lower levels of caffeine.

Arabica Coffee Arabica is renowned for its unique chocolatey, nutty, and floral notes that can be detected in the coffee.

Arabica Coffee is the most widely-cultivated type of coffee bean, and it makes up roughly 70% of the total coffee production in the world.

Robusta

Robusta Coffee Canephora is a type of coffee bean grown in Africa and parts of Asia. It has a higher caffeine content than other coffees and is used mainly for espresso blends and other strong coffees.

It has a very robust flavor and a strong aroma, with notes of dark chocolate, toast, and earthy tones. The beans are dense and have an oilier texture than some varieties.

Robusta Coffee Canephora is more forgiving to roast, so it’s an easy bean to work with for someone starting out roasting coffee. It’s also more economical, and the yields are higher, so it’s a great choice for those on a budget.

Liberica

Liberica Coffee is known for its strong, intense flavor and distinctive aroma. The beans have a slightly woody flavor and a nutty aftertaste. Its acidity level is low, making it an ideal companion to sweet syrups and flavorings.

It is native to parts of Southeast Asia and is not widely grown elsewhere. The beans are big and oval-shaped.

Liberica Coffee has the highest caffeine content of all the coffee beans, making it ideal for those who enjoy a strong cup of coffee. It is also one of the least processed coffee beans, allowing for a full flavor and a higher level of antioxidants.

Colombian

Columbian coffee beans are a favorite of many coffee lovers, as they are known for their rich, bold flavor and a pleasant aroma. Colombia is the world’s third-largest producer of coffee beans, exported to over 50 countries worldwide.

Colombian coffees are often characterized by having a balanced body, mild acidity, and a nice aftertaste. They commonly have a complex flavor profile with hints of cocoa, caramel, nuts, and floral notes.

Colombia has various growing regions, each with its unique flavor profile. These include the Sierra Nevada region, which has a light, fruity flavor with a sweet, nutty aftertaste, and the Nariño region, which produces a richer, smooth taste with chocolate and dark fruits.
